International News: U.S. President Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy by claiming that he played a "key role" in de-escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan—a statement that India has firmly denied in the past. The comment came during a joint media appearance with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, where Trump was announcing a new trade deal between the U.S. and the European Union, aimed at reducing tariffs by 15%.

“I Warned Them Both,” Trump Says About Southeast Asia Tensions

When asked about the ongoing military tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, Trump said that he had personally contacted the leaders of both countries. “I warned them directly: if you don’t move towards peace, the U.S. won’t enter any trade agreement with you,” Trump stated.

According to him, his diplomatic warning was well received, and he believes a ceasefire may be near. “This should be easy for me,” he added. “I helped end the conflict between India and Pakistan. I can do the same for Cambodia and Thailand.”

India Refutes Trump’s Ceasefire Claims—Again

This is not the first time Trump has claimed credit for de-escalating India-Pakistan tensions. He had made similar remarks during his presidency in 2019 and 2020, suggesting he acted as a mediator between the two nuclear-armed nations.

However, India has repeatedly rejected such claims. According to Indian officials, the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) was the result of a bilateral discussion between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries in 2021. They maintain that no third-party mediation was involved, nor was it needed.

U.S.-EU Trade Deal Announced Amid Global Tensions

Despite the diplomatic stir, Trump used the occasion to highlight his economic breakthrough—a new transatlantic tariff deal between the U.S. and the EU. The agreement aims to reduce or remove trade barriers that had escalated during the peak of the trade war years.

Von der Leyen confirmed the deal, saying it would bring “stability and mutual benefit to both economies.” The pact is expected to impact tariffs on steel, aluminum, and several agricultural products.

Global Reactions Mixed

Trump’s latest statements have sparked mixed reactions internationally. While some leaders appreciate his proactive stance in conflict regions, others see his claims as exaggerated and lacking diplomatic grounding.

Analysts suggest that Trump’s reentry into global diplomacy—despite not being in office—shows he is eager to remain relevant on the world stage, especially amid speculation about his 2024 political ambitions.

As Trump continues to insert himself into global affairs, his remarks on India, Pakistan, Cambodia, and Thailand have not only reignited past controversies but also drawn attention to how sensitive diplomatic narratives can shape international perceptions. Whether or not his claims hold truth, one thing is clear—Trump remains a polarizing figure in both politics and diplomacy.
